In1988,heplayedGeorgeGreen'sbrother-in-lawCyrilinLondon'sBurning.HeplayedcharacterrolesinepisodesofthepopularUKpolicedramaTheBill.HewontheOlivierawardforBestActorin1993forhisroleinStephenSondheim'smusicalAssassinsandin2000forhisroleasShylockinTheMerchantofVenicedirectedbyTrevorNunn.

Otherrolesinclude:WintergreeninOfTheeISing(London1996-concertstaging),BillyFLynninChicago(London1997)andBuddyinFollies(London2002).HetookoverforNathanLaneintheBroadwayproductionofTheProducersin2001,buthisinterpretationofMaxBialystockmetwiththedisfavouroftheproducersoftheshowandhewasreplacedbyLane'sunderstudyBradOscarintherolebeforehecouldbeseenbyreviewers.

HeplayedtheleadroleofTevyeinLindsayPosner's2007revivalofJosephStein'sFiddlerontheRoof,andin2008playedtheleadcharacterintheradioserialTheWayWeLiveRightNow.Hetookpartinthe2009LondonrevivalofDuetforOnewithJulietStevenson.

Inthe2009film,TheDamnedUnited,heplayedthesuaveJewishbusinessmanMannyCussins,chairmanofLeedsUnited.

In2010heplayedtheroleofSirHumphreyApplebyinthestageversionofYes,PrimeMinister[3]attheChichesterFestival[4]GielgudTheatre,inLondon'sWestEndfrom17September2010.[5]
