Gugu,shortforGugulethu,Xhosafor"OurPride",wasbornintheJohnRadcliffeHospital,Oxford,EnglandtoSouthAfricandoctorPatrickMbathaandhiswife,nurseAnneRaw.Herparentsseparatedwhenshewasayearold,thoughsheisstillclosetoherfather,andshewasbroughtupbyhermotherinthetownofWitney,Oxfordshire.HereshejoinedthelocalactinggroupDramascopeand,fromtheageofeleven,appearedinthepantomimeatOxfordPlayhouseeveryyear.Atalentedsingeranddanceraswellasplayingthesaxophone,shejoinedtheOxfordYouthMusicTheatreinherteens.In2001shewonascholarshiptotheRoyalAcademyofDramaticArt(RADA)inLondon.Sincegraduationin2004shehasappearedinallmedia,includingasanacclaimedJulietin"RomeoandJuliet"atManchester'sRoyalExchangeTheatreandontelevisioninsuchvariedseriesas"BadGirls"(1999),"DoctorWho"(2005)and"Marple".
